Celebrity Engagement Rings

It goes without saying that some of the most spectacular engagement rings we see tend to come from the rich and famous. People in the celebrity world often splurge when it comes to rings, and while most of us will never be able to do so to the same extent, the rings themselves can still serve as beautiful examples. And beyond that, they’re just plain fun to look at! So with that in mind, we’ve decided to highlight a few particularly gorgeous celebrity engagement rings we’ve never gotten out of our heads

1. Scarlett Johansson

Scarlett Johansson could pull off just about any fashion or accessory look, so it’s no surprise she happens to have sported one of our favorite engagement rings in recent memory. The ring was given by then-fiancé (now husband) Colin Jost, and the Saturday Night Live comedian did a wonderful job of finding a piece that matched the celebrity status (and general beauty) of his bride-to-be.

Actually, this ring caused something of a stir when people first got a look at it on Johansson’s finger, because it appears to be about as unique as celebrity engagement rings come. Jost went to James de Givenchy for the piece, and Givenchy — known for being something of an innovator in the space — came true with a thoroughly original, one-of-a-kind piece. It’s believed to feature an 11-carat stone that is a sort of smoky brown color, and somewhere almost in between an oval and a pear shape.

It seems fitting that arguably the most successful actress in modern Hollywood has perhaps the most unique ring we’ve seen in years.

2. Lily Collins

Lily Collins remains something of an up-and-comer in Hollywood. She broke through back in 2009 playing the role of Collins Tuohy in The Blind Side, but has secured her biggest roles in just the last few years. And in 2020 she had a genuine breakthrough, starring in the Netflix series Emily In Paris (which was polarizing but popular) and playing Rita Alexander in the Oscar-nominated David Fincher film Mank.

Along the way, she managed to work in an engagement as well! Writer-director Charlie McDowell popped the question last July, and gave Collin what may be one of the classier celebrity engagement rings we’ve seen in the last decade. It’s a rose-cut, three- or four-carat stone in a bezel setting, which actually makes the ring appear more transparent (in that there isn’t a base directly below the diamond). Almost like Johansson’s, it eschews the traditional sparkling diamond look, but does so for the better.

3. Camila Alves

Matthew McConaughey is massive movie star, and about as big a deal as anyone in Hollywood these days. His burst of critically acclaimed film and television performances a few years ago was so successful that the term “McConnaissance” became commonplace in entertainment commentary, and he’s so generally famous at this point that there’s speculation he could run for governor of Texas.

That said, there’s also a sort of salt-of-the-Earth quality to McConaughey that keeps him from seeming like a standard famous person. He appears to love mixing it up with ordinary people, for instance. He’s become known over the years for attending University of Texas football games, and more recently a Foxy Bingo blog post reported that he’s taken to hosting bingo games for people stuck in isolation due to COVID-19. These types of appearances, mingling amongst fans via football and bingo games — in addition to McConaughey’s charity work — have kept him from ever seeming overly glamorous (in a good way).

For all of those reasons, the engagement ring he proposed to Camila Alves (now Camila Alves McConaughey) with should be no surprise. It’s a little bit scaled down compared to a lot of celebrity rings, but it’s still an exquisite piece of jewelry, and a tasteful one at that. The ring features a large but not gaudy rose-cut gem with smaller diamonds on each side. It’s a perfect example of a ring that simply fits the look and style of its wearer, as well as a good representation of McConaughey’s undeniable but not over-the-top celebrity persona.

4. Jessica Biel

Somewhat quietly, Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel have managed to maintain one of the most stable relationships in Hollywood — or at least it seems that way from the outside looking in. Recently, Insider even produced a timeline of the couple’s relationship — noting that they briefly broke up in 2011 before getting married, but also that they’ve essentially been together since 2007, and still post “adorable photos and heartfelt Instagram posts” together. They also have two children together and, for two very famous people, have almost entirely avoided any sort of public drama.

That’s undoubtedly an enormous credit to both of them. We imagine it takes a lot of work to maintain anything resembling a normal, stable relationship — let alone one that seems particularly strong and loving — in modern Hollywood. And perhaps the engagement ring Timberlake presented to Biel back in 2011 helped to set the tone for this success! It’s a magnificent six-carat diamond surrounded by aquamarine stones and designed with direct input from Timberlake himself. Put that much effort into a ring, and get such great results, and you’re bound to have laid the foundation for a caring and considerate partnership.

5. Meghan Markle

Neither Meghan Markle nor her husband, Prince Harry, requires much of an introduction at this point. Already world famous as members of the British royal family, their recent interview with Oprah Winfrey seemed to catapult them to new heights (even if it covered some troubling and distressing subject matter). As of early 2021, it’s fair to say Markle and Prince Harry are two of the very most famous people on the planet. And to their credit they, like Biel and Timberlake, seem to be remarkably stable, all things considered.

What’s strange, however, is how little attention Markle’s engagement ring got. Sure, it made headlines at the time of the proposal, and we’d venture to guess the British gossip outlets were all over it. But this ring has a history that automatically places it among the most interesting celebrity pieces we know of.

As you may well know, that history comes in the form of two stones that belonged to the late Princess Diana (Harry’s mother, for those who don’t follow the royals). Now, per reports in Hello! Magazine and elsewhere, Markle actually upgraded the ring after it was initially revealed — replacing a gold band with a small, diamond-studded one. But it’s still an extremely elegant piece featuring those family stones, and one that fits her standing without being over the top.
